Not that this place was boring or anything like that, I mean, there were a lot of shops and such hear and there. Just nothing particularly fun. Not that she had come across.
The only thing that really interested her was that it was a castle. That's it. Just a big castle with a bunch of rooms. It had plenty of places to explore so that's what she was doing. Of course, even exploring a really awesome looking castle can get boring after a while.
It didn't help that she was alone. She liked having company, liked people to explore with. Despite being shy around people at first she enjoyed meeting others and making friends. She had always been that way. The only difference now was that she didn't have her brother here with her.
Even though it had been a while since her home world was destroyed and her brother disappeared it still felt strange not having him there. Who knew where he was or what he was doing. All she knew for sure was that he was tampering with the powers of darkness.
Zoe shook the thoughts away. It wouldn't do to get all sad and depressed or start crying. She had a big ol' castle to explore after all. So happy thoughts were in order. And happy thoughts are what she thought of, a smile working it's way back to her lips as she continued off down the corridor she was traveling.

It was such a pretty day outside. The sun was blazing down on Hollow Bastion, and it glistened on every window and reflected off every puddle that had come from the early morning's rain. Linai had been out running around since just after sunrise. She'd taken shelter in a café for about half an hour until the sun abruptly shot through the sky and lit up the city. It'd all gone uphill from there; the air was warm and most of the water had evaporated, leaving the ground newly clean and leaving lukewarm puddles for Linai to splash around in. That was how she'd spent most of her morning. Dressed in her long black Converse boots, white leggings, and a bubblegum pink corset dress, she'd ran around at full speed for hours, a wide grin on her face as her dirty blonde hair whipped in their little pigtails behind her.
She hadn't really been paying attention to where she'd been running, but suddenly she stopped moving long enough to look around, her big chocolate brown eyes a little bit puzzled. "How did I end up this far away?" she asked aloud, bringing her hands together against her chest, looking around to remember which way she'd come to get here. It wasn't often that she ended up on castle grounds... She scuffed one foot on the cement beneath her feet, then glanced around with her wide eyes, thinking. What harm could there be in exploring the castle? It had to be a lot safer now than it used to be. Right? Maybe if I just peek through the windows then I can see if there are any Heartless in there... Deciding that was the safest course of action, she wandered closer to the walls of the castle. She was short for her age. It would be difficult to see into the tall windows.
She ran to the first window and jumped at it, pulling herself up with much effort; she held herself with wobbling arms as long as she could, trying to see anything in the dark castle, but nothing caught her eye. As she moved back down her grip slipped and she fell backwards, landing heavily on her rear. "Oooph!" she squeaked when she hit. She shook her head and looked around, as if to ensure that no one saw her slip. She stood up and brushed off the poofy skirt of her dress, then walked to the next window over. To her dismay, this window was even higher. Her eyebrows furrowed and her lip stuck out in a pout. What can I do to look inside? She glanced around, and then she saw giant glass pot by the front door. She skipped over to it and grabbed at it, but it was heavier than she'd anticipated. She strained for a moment, and just when she thought she'd gotten it she felt it suddenly turn on its base and slip out of her arms, proceeding to crash loudly to the ground.
Linai jumped back and screamed as it shattered on the cement, eyes wide and fearful. Well. If there were any Heartless in the castle, they knew where she was now. For a moment Linai considered leaving, running away before she got in trouble, but... she hadn't come all this way for nothing. Sure, skipping through puddles was fun and all, but she was bored of that. She wanted to explore. After her trembled stopped, Linai took a look, noticing only now that the door of the castle was partially opened. She hesitated, but then she stepped towards it, peeking into the dimly lit castle. She called out into the desolate halls a bold, "Hello?" Then she waited.

Another one. Filled with shelf after shelf of books and a few tables with various items atop it, the room was like every other library. Not very interesting. Not when she didn't feel like sitting there and reading something. No, she was much more interested in continuing her exploration of this place.
Not that she expected to find much.
It all seemed pretty typical and boring really. A bunch of halls with a bunch of doors. Libraries and a few sitting rooms. Nothing very special so far but maybe there was something deeper inside? She sort of hoped so. It wouldn't be any fun if she explored the whole place only to find that it was a boring old castle with no hidden secrets or anything fun inside.
Jumping slightly at the faint scream, she stopped with her hand on the handle of another door. She didn't think there would be any others around the castle, it didn't seem like a place that many of the residents bothered going near.
All the same it was the scream that caught her attention, not the fact that someone was there. The scream was a from someone young, though it was hard to tell if it was a boy or a girl. Guys tended to sound sort of girly until they were teenagers and even then some could pass as girls.
Her hand slipped from the door handle and she had just started moving back down the hall towards the entrance when she heard someone calling out from somewhere in the entrance hall. The same person that screamed perhaps? Maybe even from outside of the castle? She wasn't quite sure at the moment.
Stepping into the entrance hall from one of the side corridors Zoe looked around the area, eyes landing on the doorway that led outside. The little girl standing there must have been the source of the voice she had heard. "Hi there!" She continued towards the door until she was a few feet away, stopping and crouching in front of the girl. She smiled and tilted her head a little, "Was that you who screamed just then? For several moments Linai stood there, half in the doorway with her big eyes trying to take in everything in the entrance hall of the castle. It didn't seem like anyone was around. Not even a Heartless scuttled out of the shadowy corners of the place to come and viciously greet the one who disturbed their quiet sanctuary. Linai hadn't really expected to find anyone in the first place. After all, who would go wandering into a dusty old castle? Well, she didn't count. She was an orphan. She had nowhere better to be. Linai was about to back out and leave the castle when suddenly something moved in the castle. Linai gripped the edge of the door and held her breath. It couldn't be a Heartless, could it? No. It was too bright to be a Heartless. It was... a girl?
Linai blinked and relaxed her grip on the door. It was a girl. She was tall and obviously older than herself; she was a pretty blonde - Linai could see that in the dim light of the castle. The girl made her way towards her, and Linai watched curiously. Had this girl heard her call out? Who was she? Was she friendly? Maybe she lived here. Linai couldn't ever remember seeing her in Hollow Bastion before. Maybe she was an orphan, too? Linai scanned through the darkness again, but no one else was there to keep the blonde girl company. Why was she alone in this castle? Maybe she'd been exploring the castle. Had she come to say hello?
The girl stopped just in front of Linai and crouched down in front of her, curiosity sparkling in her pretty pale blue eyes. Linai, with her hands at her sides and that same curiosity glowing in her brown eyes, stared at her. The girl greeted her enthusiastically, bringing a smile to Linai's face, and then the girl asked if she'd been the one who screamed. Linai nodded sheepishly. "Yeah," she giggled, "I accidentally knocked over a giant pot over there. I just wanted to look through the window. I kinda scared myself." The curiosity was suddenly re-lit in her eyes, and she gazed at the girl before her. "I'm Linai! What's your name? What were you doing in there?"

Up until that scream before, that had been the only sound she'd heard since arriving in this world. Maybe, now that she had stumbled upon someone, she'd hear more than just her own lonely footsteps. At the very least, she'd have a bit of company for a little while.
Admittedly, she didn't really like starting conversations with people that she didn't know. Usually. This was a special case though. Well, not really. While she didn't like starting conversations with random people, she didn't mind talking to people younger than herself. Especially when it was a kid. She loved kids. They were much more fun than grown-ups that was for sure.
Zoe giggled a little and a small grin formed on her lips. "Don't worry about that. I don't think anyone will notice." She held out her hand for the girl to shake, an introductory habit she had gained on Kazula before it was taken over and destroyed. "It's nice to meet you, Linai. My name's Zoe but you can call me Dizz if you want."
What had she been doing here? Oh yeah, exploring. Not that she had found anything but you didn't always run across awesome treasures and stuff in big castles. At least, not in this one. It was actually the only castle she had ever seen. "I was just exploring a little but there doesn't seem to be anything interesting in here. What about you, why are you out here?" Linai's mind when absent for half a moment, doing the same thing it always did, and that was wondering what the person she was talking to was thinking. The girl looked like a teenager - maybe just a young one - and she looked friendly and exciting to Linai, but what exactly was she thinking? Was she confused or angered by the presence of a younger girl? Was she mad that she'd gotten pulled away from her exploration? Linai knew she'd be a tad less than friendly if someone tried to pull her away from an adventure, but this girl seemed to have come to say hello to her of her own free will, so it wasn't likely that she was mad. Who was this girl? Was she looking for someone or something here in Hollow Bastion? Linai had no one to look for. Mother and father were dead, and she was an only child. She wondered how it felt to have a brother. That run-in with Nathan was like having a brother, kind of, only it was temporary.
The girl seemed almost hesitant to start a conversation. Linai had met other people like that before. For some reason they just didn't like talking and associating with people that they didn't already know. How did they ever meet anyone and get close to them if they were afraid of meeting people and getting close to them? It just seemed like another endless cycle. Linai seemed to be finding those a lot lately; if you smiled, the world seemed good, and it gave you more reason, but the second you frowned the world seemed bad, and if it seemed there was nothing good then you'd find no reason to smile and the world would never seemed good again. This was another one of those cases. Whoever knew that circles would be so important? Weird.
Lucky for Linai, this girl - if she was uneasy about starting a conversation - got over her own discomfort and gave Linai a wide grin. She said with a little giggle that she doubted anyone would notice Linai's fumble with the pot. The girl held out her hand to shake Linai, and Linai placed her hand in the taller girl's hand cheerily, taking it and shaking it excitedly. I thought I was the only person who ever did that! she thought with amazement as she let her hand fall back to her side. The girl introduced herself as Zoe, but continued and told Linai that she could call her Dizz. A little bit of a puzzled look slipped over Linai's round, young face. Why Dizz? she wondered to herself. I don't think Zoe sounds anything like Dizz! Linai didn't question it any further, however, as the young girl continued to speak and answer Linai's earlier question.
Zoe - er, Dizz - took a moment to think about her response, and then she said that she'd been exploring the castle. Linai knew it was a big place; how long had Dizz been in there, wandering around and searching? It seemed like an awful waste of time and energy. The girl's next comment proved to Linai that there was really nothing all too exciting in the castle. She said there didn't seem to be anything interesting inside. Sometimes that was true about people, too. On the outside they seemed so awesome and exciting, but then when you really got into a conversation with them they proved to be quite a drag. Linai hoped that Dizz wouldn't be anything like that. So far, she didn't seem to be. She actually seemed genuinely kind and fun. The girl asked Linai what she'd been doing, and she answered with a grin, "Well, I was jumping through all the puddles, but I kind of stopped paying attention and... I really don't know how, but I ended up here."

A guard of some kind probably would have been the worst possibility. That wouldn't have gone over well, since she had been snooping around a castle. She could have ended up in jail if that had been the case. Then again, if it had been a guard she wouldn't have gone and made her presence there know. Shoot, if this place hadn't looked abandoned she wouldn't have wondered around the place to begin with. Not without permission or something at least. But anyway. Running into a little girl that seemed so happy was definitely a good thing. The kids excitement as they shook hands was enough to make her giggle a little again.
Even the slightly puzzled look she received at her nickname was cute, she thought, and she felt like she needed to clear the whole bit up a little. How had she gotten that nickname anyway? She couldn't quite remember. "Dizz is just the name my brother's always called me. I'm not really sure where it came from." It must have come from Elizabeth somehow, though she couldn't see how someone would get Dizz from that. Or maybe her brother just sort of made the word up and it managed to stick. The latter seemed the likeliest origin.
Zoe hadn't been outside much. Her gummy ship was parked not far from the castle, hovering over the ground with the invisibility cloak turned on. The castle had been the first this she had come across after landing, she didn't even realize the ground was wet. Probably because she was too busy looking at the castle as she walked. "I haven't jumped through puddles in a long time." Not since leaving her home world and ending up in Traverse Town at least. And even before then, it had been quite some time. Jumping through puddles wasn't something she was supposed to do. Her mother hadn't thought it was lady-like and got mad any time she came home with wet clothes. It was a shame, really. Puddle hopping was fun.

This girl seemed quite friendly to Linai. She seemed like she didn't really mind hanging out with a little girl. She actually seemed like she liked children quite a lot! If anything, Linai liked Dizz quite a lot. The girl was so giddy and interesting, her and her strange nickname that Linai didn't understand and her peculiar desire to explore an empty castle. She certainly wasn't native to Hollow Bastion if she wanted to explore this boring old castle of ruins and memories that needed to soon be forgotten. That was okay, this girl seemed interesting; maybe she wanted to go explore Hollow Bastion! At Linai's puzzled look, Dizz decided to attempt to explain where her nickname came from. She said that her brother gave it to her, but even she didn't understand why he'd chosen it.
Linai beamed her childish grin and said unnecessarily loudly, "I have a brother, too! His name's Nathan." A little bit more quiet and timid now, she held her hands up to her chest and beamed, her pretty chocolate eyes glowing with amusement as she explained, "He's not really my brother, though. I met him one night when I was walking around. He said he can be my older brother! We looked for my parents, but I couldn't find them." Dizz thought about other things for a moment, and then, as Linai explained how she'd come about knocking over a pot at the castle trying to look through the windows, the older girl smiled and said that she hadn't gone skipping through puddles in a long time. "It's really fun! You should try it." The girl then suggested that she tag along with Linai for a while, and the little girl squeaked with happiness.
"Sure! But you've got to try to keep up. I run fast! Or, that's what people told me." Without another thought she was skipping off in the direction of the main plaza of Hollow Bastion, a gleaming smile on her face and a searching look on her face. Soon she'd find some puddles - sure enough, there was a big one on the side of the road. Linai didn't feel that she was overdressed to go skipping through puddles. Not in the slightest! She ran up to it full speed, jumped up with both feet, and landed hard in the center of the puddle, giggling madly with happiness at such a small thing. She jumped out of the puddle and trotted off again, no particular direction in mind as she moved.

It would have been bad to bump into a guard or something after trespassing. If what she had done could be considered trespassing since the castle was abandoned and there was no sign or anything anywhere that she had seen. She wouldn't have trespassed or anything if there had been a sign. She didn't often go around breaking rules or anything. So there wasn't really a need to worry about what might have happened if there had been guards. After all, chances are a guard would have told her she was allowed to be there and she would have just said okay and left. Besides, what-if's were sort of a waist of time anyway. Because that's all they were, what-if's.
The loudness of the little girls reply, as unnecessary as it might have been, made Zoe smile a bit wider. How lucky she was to run into someone so hyper and happy. It was definitely a great outcome. Much better than many of the alternatives. "Really? My brother's older than me too. Only by a minute or two though." She kept on a cheerful face even as her smile dimmed ever so slightly when Linai mentioned not finding her parents. She herself didn't have any parents. Not any more at least. "Tell you what, I'll be your big sister then. And I'll help you look for them too."
She nodded her head at the suggestion of trying puddle-hopping. "Yeah. I'll give it a shot then." From what she remembered, it had been fun. So why wouldn't it be fun now? It's not like she had matured very much since then, so that wouldn't effect anything at all.
The little girl squeaked with happiness when she mentioned tagging along and that made her giggle again. The girl was off and skipping along in no time flat and Zoe moved quickly in order to catch up, pulling the castle door shut as she did so. She was only feet behind and she felt a few drops of water hit her when the younger girl jumped into a big puddle. She didn't waste much time herself. As soon as the puddle was unoccupeid she jumped into it herself, the water splashing up and hitting her legs. | sail through an empty night IT'S ONLY YOU AND I WHO UNDERSTAND, THERE IS NO PAIN 400 WORDS linai/open TAGS ... Linai didn't mind being loud. It wasn't was she tried to do, anyways; she couldn't help but be loud and excitable. She was just a child. Most people didn't mind. Then again, most people didn't get to spend that much time with her in the first place. Most people didn't know her - they didn't know that she could be quiet and contemplative like everyone else. No one could ever really understand a child unless they, themselves, were a child. And fortunately, Dizz was a child, too, just a few years older than Linai. She smiled when Linai shouted for no apparent reason other than simply to speak loudly, and she didn't seem bothered by Linai's exaggerated excitement about jumping through puddles. Admittedly, it was a silly thing, but Linai had done it ever since she was young. No reason to stop just because people were annoyed by a little girl having fun, right? Of course not.
Linai squeaked with excitement when Linai said she'd be her older sister. She jumped up and down and clapped her hands and chirped, "It's like I have a family now!" Her face was beaming with happiness, and her grin was from ear to ear (figuratively speaking). She said with that same excited smile, "Thank you, Dizz. I've never had a sister before. I promise I'll be the best sister ever!" Zoe said shortly after that she'd help Linai look for her parents. Content with the way this new meeting had turned out, Linai grinned and took pleasure in the fact that she'd not only gotten to do something worthwhile. Nathan had decided to leave her in Hollow Bastion so as to avoid her getting hurt or endangered on another world. Linai was fine with that, but after he'd left she'd been bored.
The little girl was happy that Dizz was excited to go puddle hopping. She seemed just as happy to try it out again as Linai did; she followed quickly behind, and Linai was amused and intrigued by the fact that she wanted to do something as ridiculous as jumping through puddles. She seemed kind of like a grown-up; didn't she prefer to do adult-type things? Apparently not, but that was okay with Linai. Most adults that she met were boring anyways. It was refreshing that this girl wasn't such a killjoy as other teenagers Linai had come across. As soon as Linai left the first puddle, Dizz jumped in quickly behind and Linai let out another giddy laugh. They were nearing the town again, but Linai didn't care. She was puddle hopping with her new big sister!

But what could be the harm in having a little bit of fun? So what if she got wet and possibly a tad muddy? Dirt came of easy enough and clothes could be cleaned and hung out to dry. Or, on a nice day like this, she could just lay out in a sunny spot and let her clothes dry that way.
She hoped she'd never end up like most teenagers. Hanging around and acting cool, only playing games on video consoles. Never taking the time to enjoy a game a game from their childhood, not even once in a while for the heck of it. No, she'd rather keep her slightly childish side. Even if that meant she didn't quite fit in with other people her age. She knew she'd end up growing out of it though, every one did. She just planned to stay as she was for as long as possible. And even when she herself was too old for 'childish games' she knew she'd play them from time to time. That's just who she was. Who she always planned to be.
The little girl beamed, her smile growing even wider than it had been before if that was even possible. She grinned a little wider herself. She had been a little sister before but never an older one, though she didn't imagine it would be all that much different. No different than how she'd treat any other kid she happened across. Except for being a little more protective maybe but that was the only thing she could think of that might be altered by having a younger sibling.
"I'm sure you'll be a great little sister, Linai!" She didn't have any doubts about what she said. The little girl didn't have to act any different then she normally would to be a great sister. Zoe already thought she was a great sister. Fun and happy and excited. "I hope I make a great big sister too."
As they hopped their way closer to the town, she couldn't really find it in herself to care. Sure, there were bound to be adults and the like around. And probably a few teenagers here and there. But why should she care what they thought. Hadn't she decided to just be a kid until she grew out of it? Instead of pretending like she wasn't a kid anymore?
She giggled as she landed in another puddle. Carefree and happy. That's how she'd like to stay from now on. It was too bad she could stay like this forever. She'd have to leave sooner or later. | sail through an empty night IT'S ONLY YOU AND I WHO UNDERSTAND, THERE IS NO PAIN 500 WORDS linai TAGS ... Linai was pleased with herself for converting a teenager to her ways of fun. She didn't know how exactly most teenagers came to be the way that they were. Linai just prayed that she'd never end up that way; imagine all the other little kids like her who had no one, and then all the people they could find were boring teenagers who liked to do. Well, this teenager was obviously very different, so different to the point that she was even Linai's honorary sister! Hopping around in puddles with her new sister wasn't a bad way to spend the afternoon, now, was it? No - not at all! It was actually a pretty great way!
Dizz didn't seem to think Linai would be a bad little sister. It wasn't that hard to be a little sister, it seemed; after all, Dizz seemed to have turned out okay! She was so friendly and nice. Were all sisters that way? Linai hadn't the slightest idea; she was still young. She had a lot that she needed to learn still. Hopefully someday she'd learn. Maybe her knew family would grow to be a million times as big as her first family! Maybe her new family would even stretch across worlds. They could sent each other letters and Christmas presents and everything! Oh, that would be so fun! But she was getting ahead of herself. Right now, Nathan wasn't here. It was only she and Dizz, and she had no one else. So it was time to puddle jump!
Linai was impressed with how good Dizz was at keeping up. It was so fun to run around through the city and jump through puddles! The funny thing about it was that everyone would stare at you. The little eight year old couldn't find it in herself to care, much like her older sister; she'd been doing this - running free - all her life, and she didn't much care what others had to say about her. In fact, her only hope ever was that perhaps some kids who she didn't know would come chasing after her and jump with her, but mothers clung ever so tightly to their hands and fathers scolded kids who tried. That was okay. Linai finally had someone!
